Question: Yoshiki keeps fans waiting for 2 hours?

02Apr08

(Japanese source: here – gossip website of dubious reliability) After 10 years away from the spotlight, X Japan started out their comeback concert on 28th March 2008 2 hours later than scheduled, keeping almost 50,000 fans on the line – which, incidentally, included celebrities like Imai Tsubasa, Yada Akiko and her husband Oshio Manabu.

The reason? Yoshiki had forgotten a piece of equipment! Fans were kept waiting for 4 hours and 20 minutes for an explanation of the delay – they had arrived at about 4.30pm, but it was only at 8.50pm when vocalist Toshi addressed the delay directly, saying, “I apologise (there is no excuse) for having made all of you wait.”

After the live performance, Yoshiki was full of tears as he apologised, saying that it was all his fault. Other members on stage responded by saying , “No, it’s not your fault!” One member of the staff commented that this was one of the messiest and most haphazard lives he’d ever seen.

Apparently, when they were doing soundcheck, Yoshiki started getting flustered as he could not find his drum “back”. (バックがない) The band members and staff started searching around hastily but pretty much in vain.

Staff also commented that Yoshiki has a habit of being late, and also that he had only attended rehearsals once or twice. Pata was rather worried about this and hence arranged for everyone to turn up at 11am on that day itself to practise, but Yoshiki came 3 hours late. X Japan were supposed to play 13 songs but in the end, could only manage to play 8.

The article ends by commenting on the erai-ness (impressiveness) of the X Japan fans, who waited throughout. Well, after waiting 10 years for these rock gods, I guess 2 hours shouldn’t be that bad.

The following link was attached to the end of the article, and features a clip of Yoshiki fainting and being carried off stage. Don’t think it’s from their recent concert though, you think? Am blogging this in between lectures in the communal computer room haha so will log back in to verify/re-edit later. ^_^:

*edit, 9.06pm, 02042008: As promised, I’ve logged back in to re-edit this post. Thanks to Kankeisha, who rightly pointed out that my source was a gossip news site! And hence of dubious credibility! I was personally a bit hmmm also when I first read the article, but just thought it was interesting so posted this with just a disclaimer in the last line that I’d log back in to verify the veracity of what I’d translated.

Kankeisha said:

Please next time verify that you get your “news” from reliable news sources and not some stupid gossip site.

Yoshiki in a press conference on the 29th explicitly said that the delay was because of technical difficulties with the set up and NOT because he was late.

I don’t dispute that the delay WAS because of technical difficulties, but it is still plausible that it could be because the missing piece of equipment was the “drum back” he was talking about. And the gossip site I translated from states that he was late meeting them before the concert, like at gathering time for soundchecks, equipment checks and everything, and NOT late FOR the concert. Haha. But oh well, the truth is always somewhere in between. If I read anything more about this I’ll post again, thanks for feedback! ^_^

*re-edit, 9.13pm. Kankeisha gave another comment! Which says:

And I forgot, Toshi didn’t “address(ed) the delay directly,” the way you made it sound. He did in fact apologize for it, but in a way that wasn’t as humbly deadly serious as you make it sound but in a fun way had everybody laughing in the usual “that’s just so X” way.

Maybe you need to learn a little more about them? And about what actually HAPPENED? On top of getting better sources.

I think it’s possible that it was addressed in the humorous way as explicated above, haha, I’ve never been to their concerts ever so am in no position to judge. However, I must state that all I did was to translate this article found on a gossip site, so there are no knowledge claims made, only transmitting information gathered from gossip sites. I will remember to inform readers in future whether my news is from a newspaper site or from a gossip site. Thanks!!! ^_^
